30 Seconds to Mars Frontman Looks at 'War' in Many Ways, 29.01.2010

Posted on 02 Feb 2010 by Merovinger

30 Seconds to Mars are on a well-deserved victory lap following the release of their third album, 'This Is War,' on Dec. 8 via Virgin/EMI. The alt-rockers' follow-up to 2005's 'A Beautiful Lie' scored a debut at 19 on the Billboard 200, and the band is ready to spend 2010 touring behind the more progressive album. Fans also got into the act on the album, with in-person and digital 'summits' allowing fans across the globe to contribute claps, stomps and vocals to 'War.' Frontman Jared Leto recently chatted with Noisecreep about the direction of the album and keeping the fans the number one priority.

What does a title as immediate as 'This Is War' reflect about the album?

It was a reflection of the recording process, of our personal lives, and of the state of the world while we made this record. It was a very intense time globally, but also a really fertile time to be making art.

You've described 'War' as a loose concept album. What kind of message were you trying to make with the songwriting?

Well, that changes from song to song. There are songs like 'Kings & Queens' that have to do with the potentials and pitfalls of the American dream, and then songs like 'This Is War,' which is one of the most politically-charged songs I've ever written -- but also has to do with self-belief and perseverance. It was just a journey to get to the core of who we were as artists, to rediscover and reinvent. The great thing about making music is that you always have the opportunity to do that.

30 More Seconds (more or less) with 30 Seconds To Mars, 29.01.2010

Posted on 02 Feb 2010 by Merovinger

JARED LETO is an interesting guy. While it's difficult to get the frontman of 30 SECONDS TO MARS to open up, once he begins, he offers up a wealth of information--so much, in fact, that we couldn't fit half of it in our cover story for AP 260. Here's just some of what Leto let us in on.

INTERVIEW: Tim Karan

What was the first instrument you ever bought?
"It was a Roland Juno-106 which is now a vintage synthesizer. It's hilarious that I could own something that was brand new in the store when I bought it and now it's vintage. I was 12 years old. I never played it very well and I never figured it out. As a kid, that was complex machinery."

You played in a "Depeche Mode-esque" band when you were younger, and your producer, Flood, has produced for Depeche Mode. Are you a DM fan?
"Huge fan. We actually used the same exact sequencer that was used on [Depeche Mode's 1990 album] Violator. I believe it was also used on [U2's 1991 album] Achtung Baby. That sequencer is used on "Hurricane" and "Night Of The Hunter." It's the same, exact machine. There's something about those [synth] sounds that are so nostalgic to me."

30 Seconds To Mars Raise $100,100 For Haiti

Posted on 28 Jan 2010 by Merovinger

30 Seconds To Mars have raised a staggering $100,100 (one hundred thousand, one hundred dollars) for the Haiti earthquake appeal through a charity Ebay auction.
The lucky bidder won the chance for them and up to 3 friends to have tickets and backstage access to any show of their choice, plus an exclusive dinner with the band.

This is just one of many efforts the band have undergone to support the Haiti appeals. Singer Jared Leto recently donated £1000 ($1700) for the Echelon "House For Haiti" appeal where almost 5 houses have already been funded, and has attended the "Hope For Haiti Now" phone bank in the states.

Jared recently confirmed that himself and brother Shannon lived in the Caribbean country for a year as teenagers where their Mother helped to run two hospitals.

AMC News at Sundance 2010, Day 3 - Leto, Peet, Katzenberg and More

Posted on 25 Jan 2010 by Merovinger

[...] Without a doubt the most buzzed about interview of the day was with Jared Leto and his band 30 Seconds To Mars (see picture). When we put out on Twitter that the band was coming in, the response was overwhelming. Many of you submitted questions for me to ask the band, so here are your answers: The band's documentary that they shot for two years and have tons of footage of, Artifact, is about the making of their current album This Is War. Leto told me the documentary, which he wanted to have at Sundance, isn't ready yet, but the first 20 minutes of it have been delivered to him to review (although he hasn't seen it yet). He also said that he had just come from the Hope for Haiti Now telethon, and that the band, as part of the relief efforts, were auctioning off some 1-on-1 time with them via EBay (bid here), the proceeds of which would go to the relief effort.

The last time Leto was at Sundance was as an actor in 2007, and he seemed to enjoy having less to do as far as promoting films was concerned. He came to our studio after being out snowboarding, and after he left he was heading to a sound check for a free concert his band was doing at the Park City half-pipe. He said he thought music was so popular at Sundance because it had become a creative "orgy" at which he was happy to contribute a free show. Why free? Because people figure out how to get your music for free anyway these days, he said.
