30STM’s Jared Leto on Working With Kanye West: “It’s Slightly More than Unexpected”

Kanye West has recorded with hip-hop colleagues (Jay-Z, Nas, Common, Lil Wayne) and rock contemporaries (Maroon 5’s Adam Levine Coldplay’s Chris Martin) and shared the spotlight with the Police, John Mayer and even country sweetheart Taylor Swift. So, it shouldn’t have surprised anyone when the Louis Vuitton Don updated his blog last week with a photo from the studio featuring 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto and the Killers’ Brandon Flowers. In the post, West explained he was “working on this dope-ass song with Jared” when Flowers just stopped by the studio.

According to Leto, the image was taken earlier in the week, during a recording session with West in Hawaii, where the rapper is working “his ass off on a number of projects.” Leto says the pair were working on “Hurricane,” a track for 30 Seconds to Mars’ upcoming LP, which is being helmed by British post-punk producer Flood and should surface before the end of the year. 30STM has been working on the effort, which has been given the working title This Is War in a house in the Hollywood Hills for the last year.

Rescued kids invited to Leto recording, 11.04.2009

Actor Jared Leto says he invited children rescued from a life of prostitution to sit in on a 30 Second to Mars recording session in Los Angeles.

The actor, who serves as the band's vocalist, said in a statement he orchestrated Friday's recording session visit after learning of the non-profit group Children of the Night's attempts to help children forced into prostitution, E! Online said.

"After meeting all of the wonderful people at COTN and hearing about their enthusiasm for art and music, I invited them to join us in the studio for a day while we make our next record," said Leto, whose band is working on its third album.

Leto visited the group's Los Angeles center recently and visited with some of the children rescued from the city's streets, E! Online said.

During its three decades of operation, Children of the Night have helped more than 10,000 children ages 11-17.

MTV Newsroom - Jared Leto Is Going To Kill Us With These Cupcakes, 17.04.2009

Late last year, Jared Leto surprised pretty much everyone here in the MTV Newsroom by sending us a box of cupcakes from NYC bakery Sugar Sweet Sunshine.

It was his way of saying ‘thanks’ for a story we had done about his band, 30 Seconds To Mars, and their ongoing lawsuit with their former label, Virgin/EMI, and, to be honest, it was pretty amazing … and not just because he included some red velvet cupckaes (those things rule). No, it was because, as one MTV Staffer put it — “Jordan-freaking-Catalano sent us cupcakes!”

Needless to say, it was the kind of thing that doesn’t happen every day … or at least, that’s what we thought. Because, at around lunchtime Thursday, Leto sent us even more cupcakes. Why? Well, read on.

30 Seconds To Mars Update Fans On Legal Drama, 01.04.2009

30 Seconds To Mars drummer Shannon Leto recently spoke to Rock Sound and updated us on the band's legal dramas as they still fight to clear the $30 million lawsuit launched by their former label:

''The whole thing is bloated man,'' he admitted. ''It's just like a bee-sting or a pain in the ass, it is just another challenge and we have had them in this band our whole career. There have been bumps in the road for us the whole time and with so many regime changes at EMI and Virgin Records it does not even surprise me that this thing is still going on. It is just another war we are fighting and another war we are going to win. The whole record industry is so fucked up right now and a lot of people have their heads up their asses, I am confident that we will be fine as we have a great team around us.''
